We aim to make Mathematics lessons as interesting as possible so that all students, leave the classroom with a passion for the subject.

maths02Key Stage 3

Students follow a course based on the National Numeracy Strategy Framework, where the National Curriculum is divided into half-termly modules.

These modules are made up of approximately 55% 'Number and Algebra', 25% 'Shape, Space and Measure' and 20% 'Data handling'.

Students are set according to mathematical ability and each set follows an appropriate Scheme of Work.

 

Key Stage 4

Year 10 students study the appropriate tier of the EdExcel 1380 GCSE Mathematics syllabus, which is assessed as follows:

  • 50% Non-Calculator Examination
  • 50% Calculator Examination to be sat in Year 11.
    There is no coursework required.

Year 11 students study the appropriate tier of the EdExcel 2540 GCSE Mathematics syllabus, which is assessed as follows:

  • 40% Non-Calculator Examination
  • 40% Calculator Examination
  • 10% Using and Applying Mathematics Coursework (Year 10)
  • 10% Handling Data Coursework (Year 11)

Gifted and Talented students are also given the opportunity to study GCSE Statistics, which is assessed as follows:

  • 75% Calculator Examination
  • 25% Handling Data Coursework

Key Stage 5

maths03The level at which students study Mathematics depends on their course of study.

  • GNVQ (Intermediate) students are given the opportunity to work towards Key Skills Application of Number Level 2.
  • AVCE and A level students with grade D in GCSE Mathematics are given the opportunity to retake the GCSE course and improve their grade.
  • Students with GCSE Mathematics grade B or above are given the opportunity to study AS and A2 Mathematics.
  • Students with GCSE Mathematics grade A* are given the opportunity to study AS and A2 Further Mathematics.
