Modern Foreign Languages Print E-mail

languages01MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Learning a language is fun so lessons are often very active and lively. Students play games, sing songs, act out role plays, watch videos, as well as doing more traditional reading, writing and grammar to help them learn and practice their language skills. All students regularly use the computers and headsets in the languages computer room.

Key Stage 3
Currently all students study French or Spanish in Years 7,8 and 9. The more linguistically able also study French or Spanish from Year 8.

Key Stage 4
In Year 10 students continue studying their language to GCSE and the options system can allow for the study of a second language. We have a very healthy uptake of languages at sixth form level at Brentside and students continue their languages study at University level.

Foreign Language Assistants
We have foreign language assistants, native speakers who work with small groups of students to improve their spoken French or Spanish.

Trips
There are regular trips to Europe when students can put their languages to the test! Some of our students' views:
"Lots of fun and very educational!"
"You visit lots of really interesting places and get loads of help with languages."
"Helps you to speak French because you are surrounded by French speakers. And you get a tan!"

Film Club
There is a film club where older students can watch French or Spanish films (usually with sub-titles!) in an informal atmosphere and other lunchtime support for exam preparation.
